At 17, a southwestern Ontario woman was shocked to learn she was diagnosed with the fatal flesh-eating bacteria, facing possible full-leg amputation and permanent disability, or worse.
Tammy Peel, 39, from Essex, told how the wound on her groin went septic and she contracted necrotising fasciitis. She underwent a four-hour surgery during which tissue from the labia, part of her thigh and around her belly had to be removed to stop the spread of the disease
Maurice "Frenchie" La-Garde kisses his wife, Heike Petermann, at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Haverhill on Thursday. La-Garde, a quadriplegic since 1987, has overcome a lot in his 61 years, and his family is asking the community for help in making it over one more hurdle: getting back home to North Chelmsford.
